Carnival Cruise Lines Carnival Victory Cruise Review

carnival cruise line victory

The performers in the smaller lounges are uniformly excellent, and the production shows in the theatre will take your breath away. Try to get one of the slightly off-center seats in the lower balcony, as, on the main floor, you may well spend the evening trying to see between heads. Victory appeals to a very wide range of passengers; singles, families with throngs of young children, and even retired couples. The passenger mix varies depending upon the season, but the number of kids onboard swells dramatically during the summer and school vacation periods. A lot of passengers are reminded of Fantasyland, Joe Farcus being the most unapologetically fanciful cruise ship interior designer at work today. Sort of the cruise ship equivalent of Cher’s performing wardrobe in the ‘70s and ‘80s, in other words.

There’s a steep surcharge for this meal (which includes wine), but we enjoyed the experience. Since the Chef’s Table is limited to just 12 guests per evening (and not necessarily conducted nightly), if it’s of interest we recommend signing up on embarkation day to make sure you get a seat. Other features included an 80-inch sofa with a pair of frayed pool towels sitting atop.

This page shows all the different suite, stateroom and cabin types on the Carnival Victory. You can compare the floor layouts for each of Carnival Victory's cabin types. Cruisedeckplans.com also shows all the features, size information and number of cabins for each stateroom cabin type on this Carnival cruise ship. We also show the cabin codes thatCarnival uses to classify the different cabins on the ship.

Both have lively piano bars and nightclubs featuring music for dancing and listening. High-energy production shows, comedy clubs, karaoke, and deck parties are signature nighttime activities. So you're in the mood for some good eats, but you’d rather stay in your comfy, cozy stateroom? Simply pick up the phone and order something from our tasty room service menu. And since you get hungry when you get hungry, room service is available any time of the day (or night) and delivered right to your door. Best of all — and you may not believe this — the food's even included in your fare.

The drinking age on sailings on Carnival ships in Australia is 18. All vessels operate on a "cashless system," with any onboard purchases you make posting automatically to your onboard account. You'll receive a Sail & Sign card that you can use to make charges.

Jogging may not immediately come to mind when you think of things to do at sea, but it probably should. You don’t have to walk on water, you just have to get on a Carnival cruise. Jogging tracks are available on all Carnival ships, and are even padded for long-distance comfort. It’s where young teens ages 12 to 14 go to hang out, meet new friends, and enjoy some pretty awesome activities like dance parties, games, outdoor movies and more, in the special Circle “C” area or around the ship.

Food

And we never thought we’d say this, but there was too much bacon (not pancetta) overwhelming all other flavors. Chicken à la Grecque featured a somewhat dry boneless breast sitting atop a mound of penne in tasty tomato sauce; the menu didn’t mention the pasta (which meant we had inadvertently ordered pasta for both appetizer and entrée). Another night beef stroganoff was surprisingly tasty—the meat tender and flavors perked with pickled red onion and beets. On the first night of our cruise servers didn’t devote much energy to interacting with guests, but on the second night, our server greeted us by name and consulted on the menu. The personalized touch continued after we complained that our entrées for two nights running had been delivered lukewarm. The next night a different waiter came over and asked if the meal was hot enough—apparently our complaint has been noted.

There was a small table that could be used for dining, though tricky for two (the height was adjustable). Our cabin did not have a fridge or minibar, there was only a 1-liter bottle of Crystal Geyser water (for sale). Near the ship's tween and teen clubrooms, it has two padded trampoline areas where you can jump around and take part in games like jousting on a balance beam or shooting baskets while bouncing. There's even trampoline dodgeball and, at one end of the room, a climbing wall augmented with interactive game elements. Passengers can learn to cook everything from Carnival's classic warm chocolate melting cake to its popular saffron risotto during one- to two-hour classes that cost $30 to $59 per person. On one of Carnival's newest ships, Carnival Panorama, there's no RedFrog Pub, but the Smokehouse Brewhouse has a stage that's home to live music nightly and some of the ship's karaoke sessions. Other popular venues found on some Carnival ships include RedFrog Pub, which serves up Carnival's tasty housemade beers on tap, as well as plenty of other choices.

Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, notably, has its very own in-house brewery you can see behind glass walls — something still relatively rare on cruise ships. It makes house beers including Parched Pig West Coast IPA and Parched Pig Toasted Amber which you'll find on many Carnival vessels in kegs and cans. Carnival is the only cruise line to keg and can its own beer. Note that Carnival's two oldest ships — those that are part of the 1990s-built Fantasy Class — have relatively few balcony cabins by today's standards.

Challenge your friends to a game, or just see if you can beat the top score. After all, with the video arcade open 24 hours and an entire cruise ahead of you, you have plenty of time to try. Lots of youth activities are offered for kids as well as adults, with an impressive range of choices, so everyone in the family will be busy having fun. Amenities include four pools, seven whirlpools and almost 20 bars and lounges, a fitness center and a spa where you can indulge in a variety of relaxing treatments.

Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration are now the only Carnival ship on the list of the 50 biggest cruise ships. Seven of the line's 25 vessels measure less than 100,000 tons, which makes them almost midsize by today's cruise ship standards. With so much onboard action, a cruise vacation usually leads to a big appetite. From breakfast all the way through to late-night snacks, Carnival Radiance® has you covered.

Most public rooms open off wide indoor promenades that branch fore and aft from the spectacular atrium. When it’s time to get away from it all, you’ll do so in some of the largest cabins at sea. Carnival’s automatic gratuities arrangement adds $10.00 per person (except children under two) per day to your Sail & Sign card. This includes $3.60 for the stateroom steward; $5.50 for the dining room team. And $.90 for service in the alternative dining rooms, amounts that can be raised or lowered at the purser’s desk. You may also prepay gratuities for all service personnel at a rate of $10.00 per person per day.

And finding your way around can take some doing, as the signs at elevators and stairwells are neither as numerous or as clear as you might hope. Victory won’t take long to steal your breath away; you’ll no sooner have boarded than you’ll find yourself in a soaring nine-story open atrium, with glass elevators rising to top (Pool) deck. Promenade Deck flows like a serpentine tour of fun and diversion, from lounges and pastry shops to the casino and uber-disco. You can jump into the action at any opportunity, and just sit and enjoy observing the passing parade of humanity.

Burn some energy and enjoy a little friendly competition over basketball, mini-golf, ping-pong and other games at SportSquare™. The sports-themed spot on the ship also features gym equipment for those who want to work out under the sun. Why not have some fun at Carnival Radiance’s onboard casino, where slots, blackjack, poker and table games present the chance to pocket some pennies or even win some seriously big bucks. This small but striking library was open very limitedly during our cruise—generally just an hour or two each day to check our games and books. Then again, the collection was not much to get excited about.

Pick your favorites; then take home your fondest and funnest memories. Enjoy old time favorites like a hot pastrami on rye, grilled Reuben, or roasted turkey breast on a country roll. Our sandwiches and wraps are always hand-carved and served fresh with cole slaw or relish.

During the day, there is no specific dress code, and people dress casually. If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination, and you're bound for the top deck, that means looking like you're going to the beach — T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to go inside) are just fine. In addition, vessels offer extra-charge laundry and, on select ships, dry cleaning services. Carnival allows you to bring one bottle of wine or Champagne per person onto ships at boarding plus up to a dozen standard cans or cartons of nonalcoholic drinks such as sodas. The social and value plans cost $18 and $23 per day, respectively, when bought onboard a ship. For cruises from international ports, you'll need a passport.

The ultimate guide to Carnival Cruise Line ships and itineraries

Surrounded by a bar, the pizza counter and ice cream station, this area was as much about the food as going for a swim. The pool itself was fair-sized (4-feet 6-inches deep), while the decks around it were laid out in a sprawling amphitheater setting. This allowed for lots of loungers and on sunny sea days this area became the ship’s hub of action—getting an empty lounge chair (especially two side-by-side) was no small task.

SCENIC OCEANVIEW:

New Carnival menus include such upscale favourites as chateaubriand, lobster and rack of lamb. Dessert is usually a choice of cheesecake, apple pie, and chocolate in the form of mousse or pudding. Exciting entertainment offered varies from a Calypso band playing on deck during the deck to lavish Las Vegas-style productions and live music at many of the fun bars and lounges.

Onboard Activities

We didn’t expect to be dazzled by our brush with Carnival Victory, but we found the overall operation to be a fairly smooth-running machine. Still, we encountered a few issues that convinced us that Victory was ready for a dalliance with Carnival’s Fun Ship 2.0 upgrade program—a renovation is not scheduled until 2014. Until then, Carnival Victory uses Miami as its homeport, for inexpensive four-and five-night forays into the Bahamas, the northern Caribbean and Cozumel. On Carnival Victory, cabins fall into four main types. Cheapest are Interior cabins, which represent more than a third of the accommodations on the ship and average 185 square feet. Some Interiors are offered with two twin bunk beds; a few Interiors actually come with a porthole view. There are 19 cabins sold as Interior with Picture Window (Obstructed View)—accommodations found above and below the bridge.

A full bar menu was available from Sirens’ Bar (located aft) or Triton’s Bar (midship), along with a coffee bar at the rear of the seating area. Additionally, a cart was wheeled around at prime hours serving various concoctions. We ordered blueberry pancakes one morning and anticipated they’d be chock-full of plump berries; instead they were fluffy buttermilk pancakes with a goopy blueberry sauce on the side. Our egg orders were fine, but strips of bacon were paper-thin; the Hollandaise sauce on our eggs Benedict arrived toasted (presumably the plate had been sitting under a heat lamp). The coffee was better than at the buffet; the orange “juice” was a drink mix that had not been diluted with enough water, rendering the drink sickly sweet. On one sea day we had lunch here, choosing the pan fried fillet of king clip, served niçoise style.

Muster stations were located on deck 4 outside, an area that was otherwise closed to guests during the cruise. For two formal nights the cost was $87 for jacket, pants and shirt; shoes were an additional $13 (the jacket alone was $45; pants alone $30). Check to see how many formal nights will be offered when 5-day cruises start, and pricing is available for only one night.

The oldest Fantasy Class vessels have 28 suites and 26 junior suites. The arrival of Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration over the past two years has marked a major turning point for the line. At around 180,000 tons, they rank at No. 15 and No. 13, respectively, among the world's largest cruise ships — the only Carnival ships to crack the Top 20. They are roughly 35% bigger than the line's next-biggest ship. One more ship in the series — Carnival Jubilee — will arrive in December 2023. However, for many years it chose not to follow rivals such as Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises in building ever-bigger ships.

Featuring a more muted color scheme inspired by the sea itself, what Carnival Victory may lack in boisterousness it more than makes up for in a winning attitude and come-as-you-are ethos. Expansive pools and sport decks have plenty of room to spread out for sunning and more active pursuits; both ships have been retrofitted with massive poolside 270-square-foot LED screens. The variety of indoor and outdoor spaces ranges from relatively small lounges with a nightclub atmosphere to huge showrooms where lavish production shows are staged.

Occupying the forward portion of decks 3, 4 and 5, the Caribbean Lounge was Carnival Victory’s showroom for big productions. Most of the ground floor was flat, so sightlines here sometimes depended on the hairdo sitting between our seat and the stage. The upper levels had a steep rake, and we’d say the front rows of the balcony were probably the best spots for viewing—these seats were generally taken well before show time.

Pull up a seat, order your favorite cocktail, and let your friendly piano player know the songs you'd like to hear. Then join the sing-along for a hand-clapping, foot-tapping, finger-snapping good time. And since it's open from early evening to late at night, it's the perfect spot for a before-dinner drink or singing 'til the wee hours of the evening.Play it again, Sam. And since it's open from early evening to late at night, it's the perfect spot for a before-dinner drink or singing 'til the wee hours of the evening.

These included the blue Punchliner (rum, vodka, gin, blue Curaçao, citrus and lychee syrup), the Giddy Cosmo (pear vodka, Cointreau, citrus and cranberry juice) and a raspberry mojito—priced $8.75-$8.95. The grill offered okay burgers, not to be confused with the decadent patties at Guy’s Burger Joint (offered on the more recently renovated Carnival ships). There were also grilled chicken breasts, chicken tenders, hot dogs, chili con carne and nachos. The Asian counter, Chopsticks, also had a menu that changed daily—chicken with bok choy and mushrooms in yellow bean sauce, sliced beef honey chili, silken tofu, pork rice noodles, palm hearts and broccoli. Alas, we found everything on our plate to be saturated with sodium; we didn’t return for seconds.

The other vessel from this class was the old Destiny ship - renamed Carnival Sunshine after an extensive refit in 2013. Carnival Victory was christened by godmother Mary Frank - wife of Howard Frank (Carnival Corporation's Vice Chairman). The inaugural cruise (maiden voyage) started on October 15, 2000 (leaving from NYC New York). The first drydock refurbishment was in 2007 ("Fun Ship 1.0"). On November 13, 2018, Carnival announced Radiance ship's inaugural schedule for 2020.
